Southold Blotter: Taillight outage leads to DWI arrest in Mattituck

Kelli Thompson, 24, of Cutchogue, was arrested for DWI last Thursday around 8 p.m., according to Southold Town police. She was westbound on Sound Avenue in Mattituck, driving with a taillight and license plate light out, the report states. She was also observed crossing over a double yellow line into the eastbound lane, police said. 

• There was an anonymous report of a fire at Village Hair Studio in Southold Friday, police said. Officers responded and found the outside electric service was on fire and the fire was spreading to the residence, the report states. The Southold Fire Department responded and secured the scene until PSEG was able to cut the service around 5:30 p.m., police said.

• Robert Howard was arrested last Monday for violating a trespass affidavit, a misdemeanor, police said. A police officer entered the Greenport 7-Eleven around 1 a.m., observed Mr. Howard in the store, and was advised he was not allowed to be in that location, police said. The officer responded to a different location on Madison Avenue for a disturbance regarding Mr. Howard, the report states. He was then arrested.

Southold Blotter: IRS scam foiled in Mattituck, plants stolen in Cutchogue

A Peconic woman called police when she noticed smoke coming from her basement last Tuesday, police said. An investigation by Southold Fire Department revealed a defective boiler, the report states. 

• An employee at Mr. Roberts Convenience Store in Greenport called police when a Greenport man who was reportedly intoxicated in the store refused to leave last Tuesday, police said. Officers advised him to pay for his items and leave the store around 11 p.m. and he complied, the report states.

• A Mattituck woman reported an IRS scam last Wednesday when she received a call from someone claiming to work for the IRS who said there was a warrant for her arrest, police said. The caller had her purchase Google Play gift cards and then went to Best Buy to purchase more gift cards when she saw a sign alerting customers of similar scams, officials said. She then went to Southold police headquarters to report the incident.

• Almost 100 plants and three bags of soil — with a total value around $800 — were reported stolen from Glover Perennials in Cutchogue last Thursday overnight, police said. There are no suspects but the caller did see fresh tire tracks in the mud near where the items were stolen, the report states.

Cops: Two Southold men arrested on burglary, trespass charges

Two men were arrested after they entered an apartment  in Southold without the owner’s permission, Southold Town police said. 

Lawrence Schmidt, 33, and Roy Daniels, 24, who also both live in Southold, allegedly went into the apartment at 9625 Main Bay View Road on Saturday at about 4 p.m.

Mr. Schmidt was charged with second-degree burglary, a felony, and petit larceny, a misdemeanor. Mr. Daniels was charged with criminal trespassing in the second degree, a misdemeanor.

Both men were arraigned in Southold Town Justice Court on Sunday. Mr. Schmidt’s bail was set at $5,000 cash, $10,000 bond. Mr. Daniel’s bail was set at $500 cash or $1,000 bond. They are due back in court on Friday.

No other details were available about the incident.

Cops: Dirtbiker tried to hide in farmfield during police chase in Cutchogue

When Southold police tried to pull over a man riding a dirtbike without a helmet in Cutchogue on Saturday afternoon, he took off. 

Edward Vallone, 24, of Mastic Beach was on a 1996 Yamaha YZ125 dirtbike when a police officer spotted him on heading east Route 25 at about 2:30 p.m. 

He did not pull over despite the officer using lights and sirens, police said in a press release Sunday morning. Four officers joined the pursuit.

Mr. Vallone continued to drive east and passed several cars and ran a red light while turning left onto Cox’s Lane, according to police.

“He continued north to Route 48 and then proceeded westbound in the eastbound lane of travel and then turned south into a farmfield in an attempt to hide from police,”  police said.

However, police found him near the bus depot on Depot Lane. He was taken into custody without incident, and charged with third-degree unlawfully fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, a misdemeanor, and various traffic infractions. 

Back at headquarters, police processed and released Mr. Vallone on cash bail. He will be arraigned at Southold Town Justice Court at a later date.

His dirtbike was towed from the scene and impounded.

Richard Collins of New York City was arrested and charged with DWI on Peconic Bay Boulevard in Mattituck last Sunday, Southold Town police said.

• A Mattituck man reported last Monday that $3,500 in cash was taken from the center console of his unlocked truck overnight, police said.

Cops: Valero gas station in Cutchogue robbed early Sunday

Southold Town police are investigating an apparent armed robbery early Sunday morning at the Valero gas station in Cutchogue.

The attendant told police that a woman, described only as white, entered the station and displayed what appeared to be a handgun and demanded money, police said. Police responded just after 2 a.m. and the suspect could not be located.

The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of money on foot in a northern direction, police said.

Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact police at 631-765-2600.

Southold Blotter: Maryland man arrested on DWI charge

Darwin Depaz Javier, 25, of Calverton was arrested on Saturday by Riverhead Town police during a traffic stop, according to Southold Town police. He had an active arrest warrant for aggravated unlicensed operation, a misdemeanor, issued by Southold Town Justice Court, police said. Riverhead officers transferred custody to Southold, officials said.

• A Maryland man was found speeding Saturday on County Road 48 near Ackerly Pond Lane in Southold and failing to maintain in his lane of travel.

Daniel Aranda-Jaime, 26, was arrested around 5:45 p.m. for driving while intoxicated, a misdemeanor, according to Southold police.

• There was a report Saturday of two people swimming to shore in Arshamomaque Pond Preserve in Southold after their boat capsized, police said. The original caller said the two people were able to swim back to shore before police arrived, the report states.

• A man reported last Monday that he left his cellphone, wallet and pistol license in the cupholder of a seat in Mattituck Cinemas and when he returned to retrieve them, they had been stolen, police said.

• A man failed to stay within the double yellow lines and crashed into a cedar tree on the roadway into Orient Beach State Park, police said. He was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital with head pain and bleeding on Saturday around 3 p.m., the report said.

Southold Blotter: South Carolina man arrested for possession in Greenport

Anthony Carroll, 18, of Summerville, S.C., was arrested in Greenport last Wednesday for fifth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor, according to Southold Town police.

Officers were on patrol in the area near the Third Street  basketball courts around 6:10 p.m. when an odor of marijuana was detected, police said. Mr. Carroll produced 10 bags containing over an ounce of marijuana, officials said.

• Gary McVeigh, 43, of Port Jefferson was arrested in Mattituck Saturday on Route 48 near Shirley Road for driving while intoxicated, a felony, according to police.

• Jeanine Velazquez, 40, of Shelter Island was arrested in Southold near Hortons Lane on Route 48 on Sunday around 12:30 p.m. for driving while ability impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor, police said.

• A Marlboro, N.J., man fell asleep at the wheel while driving eastbound on Route 48, causing him to cross over into the westbound lane and drive off the roadway onto the grass. The vehicle then struck a tree, causing it to flip on its side, police said. The car then struck a PSEG pole, the report states.

The man was able to get out of the car on his own and did not sustain any major injuries, but was still transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital to get checked out around 1:15 a.m. Monday, police said.

• A school bus and a car were stopped at a red light at the intersection of Route 25 and Cox Lane in Cutchogue Monday around 2:50 p.m. when another car driven by a Southold man was unable to stop in time and struck the car in the rear, police said. That vehicle then rolled into the school bus and hit it, police said.

• An East Marion man reported his bike stolen in Greenport sometime between 2:30 and 3 p.m. Friday, after he left it unattended, police said. It was valued at about $1,500, the report states.

• A Greenport Village woman reported that a propane tank and a plastic garbage can, valued at about $80, were stolen from her residence last Monday, according to a report.

Southold Blotter: Greenport man arrested for driving while intoxicated

Jose Rodriguez-Ramirez, 40, of Greenport was arrested for driving while intoxicated and driving without a license at 6:24 p.m. last Wednesday on Pike Street, according to Southold Town police.

• Police responded to a report of a car stuck in the construction area near Boisseau Avenue in Southold on Route 48 and saw a vehicle off the road, on top of construction material, police said.

Thomas Hamlin, 61, was identified as the driver and was arrested for driving while intoxicated on Friday around 9:30 p.m., according to Southold Town police.

• A Mattituck man called police when he noticed a tow dolly, valued at $500, had been removed from his barn on Saturday, police said.

• A Southold man fell victim to a phone scam last Monday, when he received a call from someone claiming to be an Apple Care representative, police said. The unknown caller then said that if the man wanted his computer to work, he would have to buy two $100 iTunes gift cards and provide the codes over the phone, the report states. The man then contacted Apple support, who confirmed they had not contacted him, officials said.

• A Cutchogue woman reported her canoe missing from her beach house sometime in the past five months, police said. It is valued at $100.

Southold Blotter: Coast Guard suspended search after boat was found in East Marion last week

The Coast Guard was searching for two people in Long Island Sound Monday after a 14-foot white-and-blue sailboat with no mast was found near Truman Beach in East Marion, according to a Coast Guard press release.

Spencer Mugford, 21, and Sophia McKenna, 20, were last seen on a white tandem kayak around 2 a.m. on Sunday via social media, the press release said. When Mr. Mugford did not show up to an event Sunday morning, his parents called the City of Groton Police Department in Connecticut, the release said.

The Coast Guard suspended its search Monday at 10:30 p.m. after looking for the pair for 71 hours and covering a 2,025-square-mile area. The Coast Guard searched with local and state agencies, including assistance from Southold Town police, to identify the boat once it washed ashore, according to Southold police.

“Suspending a search for missing or overdue boaters is never an easy decision to make after an extensive search,” said Cmdr. Andrew Ely, chief of response, Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound. “We search for every person as if we are searching for one of our own. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Spencer Mugford and Sophia McKenna.”

• Eswin Perez, 34, of Greenport was arrested for driving while intoxicated and driving without a license last Thursday around 2:25 p.m. on Main Road in Greenport after being observed driving on the shoulder of the road, according to Southold police.

• Jose Medrano, 39, of Greenport was arrested on Saturday for DWI around 2:30 a.m., police said.

• A Calverton woman was arrested Saturday near Route 48 and Hortons Lane in Southold after police responded to a report of a vehicle driving erratically around 7:21 a.m., police said. Kimberly Fleischman, 38, was arrested for driving while ability impaired by drugs and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a felony, according to police.

• Benjamin Weir, 20, of Riverhead was arrested for DWI Sunday around 4:45 a.m. on Route 48 near Peconic Lane in Peconic after he was found speeding in the area, police said.

Southold Blotter: Five teens injured Southold crash

Five teens were injured in a crash in Southold last Saturday while driving on Cedar Beach Road, according to Southold Town police.

Four of the teens were 17 and one was 15. The crash occurred just after midnight, when dense fog impaired the driver’s ability to see a sharp bend in the road, police said. The car struck a tree and rolled over on its passenger side and the five teens were transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital with minor injuries, officials said.

• A manager at Claudio’s marina reported missing parking signs and said other signs were covered in a greasy substance. A suspect was told he is no longer allowed on Claudio’s property and the manager will notify police if security footage is available, the report states.

• While on patrol last Saturday, police saw a large group of juveniles having a party at Goose Creek Beach in Southold, police said. The officer told them to clean their trash and leave the area around 11:45 p.m. This is the third time in two weeks police were called to this location due to parties by youths, according to reports.

• A Southold woman was cooking veggie burgers when her oven door burst open last Tuesday around 11:50 a.m., police said. The Southold Fire Department responded and said the oven never turned on, causing a gas buildup.

Southold Blotter: Jet ski fire damages nearby shed

Police and the Southold Fire Department responded to a fire at a residence in Southold Sunday around 1:30 a.m., police said. Two jet skis on the side of the residence were on fire, and the owner’s son was attempting to extinguish it with a garden hose, the report states.

The officer who responded used additional water from another hose, and the fire department fully extinguished it when they arrived, police said. The fire caused damage to the east side of the house and a nearby shed, police said.

• An employee of the Whiskey Wind Tavern in Greenport called police when a Greenport man became enraged and punched a plate glass window valued at $500, causing it to shatter, Saturday around 9:30 p.m., according to Southold Town Police.

• A Cutchogue man called police Saturday after being the victim of a phone scam, police said. A woman claiming to be from the IRS ordered him to purchase $1,987.73 in Google Play cards and to give her the ID numbers because he owed back taxes, police said. He tried to call the number back once he realized it was a scam, but the number was out of service.

• A dog was reported running around unattended in the parking lot and inside of a Southold restaurant last Tuesday around 7:20 p.m., police said. The dog was found to be acting aggressively and was eventually returned to its owner, who was given a town code violation, the report states.

• A Laurel woman reported Coronas, three one-dollar bills and a car charger were removed from her vehicle last Monday, police said. She said it most likely happened some time Friday night, officials said.

Southold Blotter: Greenport man arrested for trespassing

A Greenport man was arrested for trespassing Monday, according to Southold Town police.

An officer on patrol observed Robert Lehmann, 66, on Claudio’s property, who had been warned previously he is not allowed there, police said. He was arrested around 5:30 a.m., was unable to make $100 bail and was held for arraignment, police said.

Claudio’s management signed a trespass affidavit two days prior when he was found on their property, according to police. Mr. Lehmann was advised to leave on Saturday, and he complied, police said.

Mr. Lehmann had been arrested last year for pouring paint over parking spaces at Claudio’s.

• A Southold woman and her husband were kayaking in the Little Peconic Bay area in Southold around 1 p.m. Tuesday when their neighbor exposed his genitals to her while he was tanning, police said. She asked him to stop the behavior, but he ignored her and continued to stand there. She did not press charges for public lewdness, but wanted the incident documented and the man spoken to, police said.

• A Cutchogue woman called police when she discovered a campaign sticker for a 1st Congressional District candidate glued to her windshield while it was parked at her residence last Wednesday, police said.

• A Mattituck man reported both windshields of his car were kicked in some time between June 16 and June 17, police said.

• A Southold man reported his landscaping trailers were broken into sometime during the night last Tuesday, police said. Four leaf blowers, four weed wackers, four hedge trimmers, and two locks, valuing about $3,000 total, according to police.

• Officers responded to reports of youths littering at Robins Island Cove last Tuesday around 3 p.m., police said. Two Cutchogue teens and one Laurel teen were advised to pick up their garbage and not to litter in the water, the report states.

Southold Blotter: Copiague man arrested for DWI

• Cesar Cardoza, 39, of Copiague was arrested for DWI after he hit a parked vehicle on Wickham Avenue Friday, police said.

• A pair of teens from New York City were arrested last Monday around 4:45 p.m. for unlawful possession of marijuana at the Oyster Factory on Shipyard Lane in East Marion, police said.

• A Southold woman reported her house was broken into last Tuesday around 2 p.m., police said. An unknown person cut a window screen and broke a rear kitchen window. Once inside, the burglar broke the glass on a locked armoire and took jewelry, the report states.

• White paint was poured over several Claudio’s signs at some point during the evening of July 5, police said. The owner will review video surveillance footage and notify Southold detectives, the report states.

Southold Blotter: Multiple reports of people peddling door-to-door

Southold Town police received multiple reports of people peddling door-to-door in Mattituck and Southold Tuesday afternoon.

Officers advised the peddlers that they must obtain proper permits from Southold Town before soliciting at people’s doors. An additional report came in at 6:20 p.m., according to a report.

Police also received two reports of an exterminating company peddling last Thursday around 6 p.m., according to a report.

• A short caused by lightning sparked an electrical fire in the basement ceiling of a Southold home around 6 p.m. last Tuesday, police said.

A woman in the home called police shortly after hearing thunder and said her basement had filled with smoke. The Southold Fire Department responded to extinguish the fire.

• A Southold man reported that parts were removed from junk vehicles at an auto body shop he manages in Cutchogue over the past three month. The parts included a radiator, battery and windshield wiper blade assembly, police said. Gas was also siphoned from multiple vehicles, officials said. The missing items were valued at $550, police said.

• A Southold woman and Laurel man were involved in an accident while exiting the Mattituck Plaza shopping center last Wednesday, police said. Around 4:45 p.m., the woman was making a left turn out of the shopping center and failed to yield to a southbound car on Factory Avenue, the report states. Both vehicles sustained damage, police said.

Blotter: Mattituck man arrested for stealing liquor from a store in Cutchogue

Jamie Winkelman, 33, of Mattituck, was arrested for petit larceny, a misdemeanor, around 2:30 p.m. Monday, after he was seen stealing liquor from a store in Cutchogue, police said.

• Kyle VanDuzer, 33, of Southold, was arrested for seventh degree criminal possession and third degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle Monday around 9:10 p.m., according to Southold Town police. He was pulled over heading eastbound on Route 25 in Cutchogue, and was found to have a revoked license. An officer found heroin, 26 hypodermic needles and an open container of alcohol in his car as well, police said.

• A Greenport woman was arrested in Mitchell Park around 5 p.m. Monday, police said. She was found intoxicated with her pants down to her knees and on backwards, exposing her underpants and private areas, according to Southold Town police.

• A 69-year-old woman from Ledyard, Conn., was arrested Saturday at Claudio’s Clam Bar after she struck a police officer in the forehead with an open hand, a violation, according to Southold Town police.

• A Greenport woman reported two suspects stealing from her store in Greenport Village last Thursday around 2:16 p.m., police said. The woman said one suspect put on two belts and left without paying, valued at $120, and the other took a pair of sunglasses that cost $40, the report states.

• A Mattituck woman reported someone destroyed her mailbox with an explosive last Thursday around 2:20 p.m., police said.

• A Shelter Island man reported a man acting irrationally on the North Ferry who appeared to be under the influence of drugs around 9:17 p.m. Saturday, police said. The man was from Huntington Station and was found to be in possession of three unidentifiable white pills, three glass pipes, three glass bowls, a bottle of ammonia and butane fuel, police said. He was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital for treatment, the report states.

Southold Blotter: Beehive stolen from Custer Observatory

Southold Town police responded to a report of an intoxicated male urinating in the flower beds of a parking lot in Cutchogue on Saturday around 4:24 p.m., and the officer transported him to Mattituck, where he was trying to go, police said.

• A New Suffolk man said that multiple items were stolen off his front porch sometime in the last month, including a weed wacker, a kerosene heater and an air compressor, police said. The items valued about $250.

• A Southold woman reported a burglary at her residence on Saturday around 5 a.m., in which she believes her ex-boyfriend gained entry to her home by removing an air conditioner from the window, police said. She said he took an undisclosed amount of money and a pack of cigarettes before fleeing through a field behind her house, the report states.

• A beekeeper at the Custer Observatory called police on Friday when he realized someone stole a beehive with honey bees in it, valued at $200, according to Southold Town Police.

• A propane tank exploded at a Greenport man’s home last Tuesday around 6:45 p.m., causing damage to his fence and above-ground pool. Further investigation revealed there had been a leak in the gas line and it was ignited by an unknown source, causing an explosion, the report states.

Southold Blotter: Mattituck gas station burglarized

• A Greenport woman called police when she noticed an unknown male in her bedroom Saturday around 2:24 a.m., police said. She said he may have entered her home through an unlocked window.

She stated she left her bathroom and saw a male standing in her bedroom doorway with a shirt over his face, and that he appeared to be disoriented and confused and then exited through the front door, the report states. Police searched the area with no results.

• There was a burglary Saturday around 1:40 a.m. at a gas station on Main Road in Mattituck, where an unknown person threw a large rock into a glass door to gain entry and stole 150 cartons of cigarettes, valued around $1,500, police said.

• A custodian at St. Agnes School in Greenport said that two televisions were stolen after hours at some point before last Monday, police said. The total value was $872.94, the report states.

Southold Blotter: Moped driver impaired by drugs arrested

Andrew Stulsky, 46, of New Suffolk was arrested last Wednesday when he was observed operating an unregistered electric moped in New Suffolk, according to Southold Town police. He was then found to be impaired by drugs and was arrested around 3:18 p.m. for driving while ability impaired by drugs.

• Daniel Papa, 48, of Rutherford, N.J., was arrested for aggravated driving while intoxicated Tuesday at 3 a.m., police said.

• Jean Eckardt, 62, of Greenport was arrested for DWI after a crash in Southold around 5 p.m. Saturday, police said. There were no injuries.

• A street sign at Knollwood Lane and another at East Mill Lane was uprooted and removed last Tuesday, police said.

• A Southold woman called the police last Thursday around 9:30 p.m. when she noticed a man laying on her front lawn without a shirt on, police said. Police canvassed the area and located the man, who was intoxicated, and transported him home, the report states.

• A Greenport woman reported her brother’s 1950 Chevrolet pickup truck stolen from his driveway last Thursday, police said. Her brother confirmed on the phone that no one had permission to take it, the report states.

• Police responded to a Greenport business when a report came in about an unknown female, approximately 40 years old, shoplifting several pieces of clothing Sunday around 8 p.m., police said. The items she took were valued at over $150, police said.

• A Southold man said multiple fishing poles were stolen off the back of his boat at the Peconic Bay Yacht Club Monday around 8:53 a.m., police said. The three poles were valued at $900 total, the report states.

Those who are named in police reports have not been convicted of any crime or violation. The charges against them may later be reduced or withdrawn, or they may be found innocent.

Southold Blotter: Southold man arrested for DWI in Greenport

 A Southold man was arrested in Greenport Friday around 8 p.m. after he was involved in a motor vehicle accident and was discovered unconscious at the wheel on Main Street, according to Southold Town police.

Jason Stulsky, 37, was charged with DWI drugs, possession of a controlled substance and possession of a hypodermic instrument, police said. He was found to be impaired by drugs and was in possession of fentanyl and a hypodermic needle, according to a press release. 

He was transported to Eastern Long Island Hospital by the Greenport Fire Department.

• An employee of Osprey’s Dominion in Peconic called police Sunday when an unknown man jumped on and popped a 12-foot inflatable dog that was on the property with an animal rescue organization, police said. A volunteer from that organization said the man ran from about 20 feet away and jumped on the dog, police said.

The man apparently said, “I’m not paying $2K to fix that dog,” and took off in a car. The vehicle’s license plate was recorded, the report states, but no arrest has been made.

• While out on patrol Saturday around 4:30 p.m., police observed Richard Hermance outside his Greenport residence. He was arrested on an outstanding arrest warrant from Southold Town Justice Court and held for arraignment, officials said.

• A Southold woman called police, saying her father was punched in the chest outside the Orient post office Friday around 11 a.m., police said. Her father said he’d had an argument with an Orient man about his driving, but the Orient man denied punching him, police said. They were advised to stay away from each other and no charges were filed, according to Southold Town police.

• A Southold man and woman reported that a Greenport man sent them threatening text messages last Wednesday around midnight, police said. The texts said that he wanted to buy a gun and shoot them, the report states. They said they wish to pursue charges and were advised to request an order of protection, police said.
